Volleyballs needed for a Connelly Alumna and her troops in Afghanistan
Posted on: August 19, 2010

Elizabeth Lazzari '05 graduated in May 2009 from the United States Military Academy, West Point. She recently deployed from Fort Campbell, Kentucky to Afghanistan with 440 troops from the 101st Airborne Division. In yet another example of how Connelly alumnae mirror Mother Connelly's motto of "Actions Not Words," Liz is requesting the Connelly family's assistance in helping others.

Please help Cornelia Connelly School in its quest to gather volleyballs for Liz, our fellow alumna, and her troops.

Liz's recent letter home:

Hello everyone! Well I have been at Sharana for a few days. I have been super busy and this is my first chance to get to email. Taking over an Aid Station is quite the adventure. I learn something new everyday and am challenged to grow with each experience. It is still fairly hectic right now because we are replacing another unit so we are in the process of them switching out and us getting started. Once we get into a rhythm I think it will be better...I hope :)

I live near the mountains so it is not ridiculously hot, which I enjoy. The mountains add beauty to the austere environment. There is no green...just brown and rocks...but then the mountains rise from the horizon and I am reminded that there is always something to thank God for. My living conditions are okay. They are much better than the Infantry soldiers out on mission, sleeping on the ground, so I cannot complain.

I continue to be amazed at the quality of soldiers around me. They constantly impress me. I would not be able to do this without them. They are my family out here and I am so thankful for each and every one of them.

Shout out to my Army vball girls again. Ladies, I need some volleyballs for my soldiers. There is an outdoor volleyball court on the FOB (forward operating base), but there are no volleyballs. They keep bugging me to get some volleyballs...I thought you might be able to help me with that. I promised them I would make something happen and it's pretty much all they talk about these days :)

I hope all is well back home. I miss all of you and think of you often. Thank you for all of the wonderful emails. I cannot even begin to express how much these mean to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you...I could not do this without your love and support.

With love and prayers,
Liz
