4 Ways to Help Others for Human Rights Day
Posted on: December 7, 2010

Observance of International Human Rights Day began in 1950 to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly and is observed every year on December 10. At Connelly, this week, we're calling attention to simple rights that are not available to others. Connelly students accepted a challenge at a Respect Rally held earlier this year - a challenge to initiate a fundraiser to embody sisterhood and global community. Help us bring joy this Christmas to suffering children in the world.

  • DONATE $2 FOR A "FREE THE DALITS" BRACELET: Students who purchase and wear a $2 teal-colored Free the Dalits bracelet can enjoy a free-dress day on Friday, Dec. 10. The funds raised from the sale of the bracelets help sponsor the education of a Dalit girl in India. Alumna Gaby Espejo '10 will travel to India in January to work with a restoration program for Dalit girls who have been victims of human trafficking. Gaby was on campus on Friday to sell T-shirts to raise money for the program.
  • DONATE QUARTERS ON FRIDAY: Students have chosen to work with The Central Asia Institute, an organization dedicated to promoting a good education for young girls in the remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Connelly students will be raising money to help build a school for girls in Pakistan. On Dec. 10, Connelly girls will be selling tubes of mini M&Ms for $1. Each tube holds 40 quarters - $10 in quarters. Each class is encouraged to have 100% participation and bring back the tubes filled with quarters. The class with 100% participation will receive spirit points as a reward.
  • DONATE TOOTHBRUSHES BY FRIDAY: Students are collecting toothbrushes for children in Dalit orphanages. Many of the children in India's orphanages never see dentists and suffer from gum disease and loss of teeth. Connelly students are working with Harvest India to collect 5,000 toothbrushes for the children. Donations are due by Dec. 20, please.
  • DONATE SMALL GIFTS FOR CHILDREN BY DEC. 14: The Random Acts of Kindness Club is encouraging Connelly students, families, faculty and staff to pick up a shoe box from the computer lab and fill it with goodies for a boy or girl between the ages of 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. If you include a note, along with your name and address, the child might write back to you. The Random Acts of Kindness Club is working with Operation Christmas Child to provide these simple gifts to children in third-world countries. Please make your donations by Dec. 14.

"I teach at Connelly because this school empowers its students to become strong, confident thinkers in a joyous and happy learning environment. I have a special privilege to see God every day in the faces and actions of my students."
Michael Ambrose,
Math teacher

"I feel privileged to go to a school where I know everyone there cares about me and supports me. Connelly has helped me grow in my faith and build my confidence. I could not have picked a better school for high school."
Raynee, Class of 2013

"I had a pretty remarkable experience at Connelly. I think it was the catalyst for my university acceptance. I owe the rest of my life decisions and career choice to that experience at Connelly."
Sally Polk-Garcia '73
