Connelly canned food drive feeds 4,000 families
Posted on: November 9, 2010

Connelly Junior leads October canned food drive that feeds 4,000 Orange County families
Connelly Junior Alexine Gallagher led an October canned food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank, Orange County. The drive collected 6,000 pounds of food - enough to feed 4,000 Orange County families of five.
The collection culminated at the Oct. 29 Mater Dei v Servite football game. Donations were collected in barrels at Connelly, Rosary, Servite and Mater Dei campuses.
Last year, Alexine organized the drive that collected 316 pounds of canned food for the Irvine-based assistance organization. Alexine said she did not have a specific goal, but wanted to exceed last year's donations. The Connelly Family of students, faculty, staff and supporters were encouraged to donate canned food to help feed Orange County's hungry and impoverished families. Additional collection barrels and a large truck were at Angel's Stadium for the Oct. 29 game, Alexine said.
According to Second Harvest Food Bank 1 in 6 Orange County residents is at risk of hunger. The increased unemployment rate means more families are struggling. More than a third of those at-risk of hunger in Orange County are children. Children account for 35% of the 615,000 individuals in Orange County that have to worry about going to bed hungry.
